Engelberg is the closest real ski resort to Zurich Airport — 100 km, a little over an hour by road — and the only one on this site you could plausibly reach, ski and leave in a single day.
It is also home to the Titlis glacier, which puts lift-served skiing at nearly 3,000 m within seventy-five minutes of an international terminal.

Note the gap between road and rail here: an hour and a quarter against just over two hours. Engelberg is the resort where the car saves the most time proportionally, because the railway approaches it via Lucerne rather than directly.
The Titlis
Engelberg’s defining feature is altitude. The lift system climbs from the village at 1,000 m to the Klein Titlis at just under 3,020 m, taking in the rotating Rotair cable car on the way — the glacier section runs into summer, and the vertical drop from top to village is among the largest in Switzerland.
That vertical is also why Engelberg has a reputation for off-piste and freeriding out of proportion to its size. The Laub and the Steinberg descents are well known to anyone who follows that side of the sport.
The village
Engelberg is built around a Benedictine monastery founded in the twelfth century, and the abbey is still active — which gives the place a character quite unlike a purpose-built resort. It is a working village with a monastery at its centre and a glacier above it.
Because it is close to Lucerne and easy to reach, it draws day visitors as well as week-long guests, and the summer traffic to the Titlis is substantial.
A realistic day trip
This is the only destination on this site where a day trip from the airport makes sense. An early arrival, a transfer at 09:00, and you are on the mountain before midday with an evening flight still viable. Summer
The same transfer price applies. The Titlis cable cars run through the summer to the glacier, where snow and ice remain year-round, and the surrounding valley is a hiking base. The combination of glacier access and a short transfer from a major airport makes Engelberg unusually easy to visit outside winter.
