Zermatt is the one destination on this site that no car can reach. The village banned combustion vehicles decades ago, and the ban is real: the road ends at Täsch, five kilometres short, and everyone finishes the journey by train.
This is not a detail to discover on arrival. It changes how you book, and it is why our price is quoted to Täsch rather than to Zermatt.
How the journey actually works

Matterhorn Terminal
A large covered car park and a railway platform in one building. The transfer stops here; luggage trolleys are at the platform.
Shuttle train, ~12 min
The Zermatt Shuttle runs frequently through the day. No booking; buy at the terminal or in the app.
Electric taxis
From the station, small electric vehicles and hotel shuttles cover the village. Many hotels collect guests on request.

Train or car for Zermatt?
Zermatt is the destination where our own answer is least one-sided.
By rail the whole way is around three and a half hours — essentially the same as the road, because the car does not save you the final train. The route runs through Bern or Lausanne to Visp, then up the Matter valley on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. On a good connection it is one change; on a bad one, four.
By road to Täsch you carry your luggage exactly twice: into the car at ZRH, and out of it at the shuttle. For a family with ski equipment that is materially better than four changes. For two people with rucksacks, on a direct connection, the train is simpler and cheaper.
The decisive factors are group size, equipment, and whether your arrival time lines up with a clean rail connection.
Täsch, practically
The Matterhorn Terminal at Täsch is built for exactly this handover: covered parking, a station platform, trolleys, and a shuttle every few minutes through the day. It is not a rural halt where you wait in the snow.
If you are driving yourself, this is where the car stays for the whole stay and is charged accordingly — one of the reasons a hire car makes less sense for Zermatt than for almost anywhere else in Switzerland.
Zermatt itself
The village sits at 1,608 m with the Matterhorn at the head of the valley. The ski area is one of the largest and highest in the Alps, reaching the glacier at the Klein Matterhorn, and it links across the border to Cervinia in Italy — which means you can ski into another country and back, with a passport worth carrying.
Because of the altitude, glacier skiing continues through the summer. Zermatt is one of the few places in Europe where skiing in July is not a novelty.
The absence of cars is the thing visitors remember. The village is quiet in a way Alpine resorts generally are not, and walking it is pleasant rather than a matter of dodging traffic.

Can you drive from Zurich Airport to Zermatt?
