Leaving a car at Zurich Airport costs you the parking tariff, the fuel both ways, and the driving. A transfer costs a fixed fare each way and nothing else. The crossover point depends on two things: how long you are away, and how far you live from the airport.

Booking parking online is cheaper than these on-site rates and opens P60 and P65 outdoors, advertised from CHF 94 a week, which pushes the crossover later. Price your own dates on both sides before deciding — that is the only comparison that counts.

The drive itself. Two hours of your time on a return from Lucerne, and the same again at the end of a long-haul flight when you are least fit to drive.

The walk with luggage. The cheaper car parks are the further ones. That is the trade.
The car in winter. An uncovered space in January means clearing snow at 23:00 before driving home.
Two cars. A group of five who would need two vehicles doubles the parking side of the comparison and not the transfer side.
When parking is simply right
When you need the car the moment you land. When you live somewhere without a rail connection and a transfer would be long and therefore expensive. When you are dropping someone off — nothing beats a short-stay car park for two hours. And when the trip is a couple of days, where the parking tariff has not had time to accumulate.
