Saas-Fee is car-free, high, and surrounded by thirteen peaks above 4,000 metres. It is the neighbour of Zermatt in the same corner of the Valais, and like Zermatt it does not admit combustion vehicles — but unlike Zermatt, the road goes all the way to the village edge.
How the journey works
Saas-Fee bans cars inside the village, not on the approach. A transfer drives to the car park at the village entrance, where you unload; electric taxis and hotel shuttles cover the last few hundred metres. There is no train leg, which makes it simpler than Zermatt.

The rail journey is marginally faster on paper — three hours twenty against three hours thirty-seven — but it costs three to five changes ending in a postbus up the Saas valley. As at every car-free resort, the arithmetic turns on how much you are carrying and how many of you there are.
The skiing
Saas-Fee’s terrain sits high, reaching the Allalin at around 3,500 m via the Metro Alpin, an underground funicular. That altitude produces a long season and reliable glacier skiing well into the summer — Saas-Fee is one of the few European resorts where summer skiing is routine rather than exceptional.
The village sits at around 1,800 m, encircled by the Mischabel range. The setting is closed and dramatic in a way that even Zermatt is not: peaks on three sides, glacier tongues visible from the street.

The prices are within twelve francs of each other and the journey times are effectively identical. The real difference is the last leg — a shuttle at the village edge against a mountain railway — and the size of the place.
