The night curfew
Zurich Airport operates under a night curfew. Scheduled flights do not depart after 23:00, and the airport is closed to movements overnight before reopening at 06:00.
This has a consequence people discover the hard way: a badly delayed late-evening flight can be cancelled rather than merely delayed, because once the window closes the aircraft cannot leave. If your departure is the last of the evening and it is slipping, watch the departures board rather than assuming it will go when it is ready.
It also means the terminal is not a 24-hour building in the way some hubs are — relevant if you were planning to sleep here.
Shops open on Sunday
Here is the genuinely useful fact. Swiss shops are closed on Sundays and close early on Saturdays, by law. Airport retail is exempt. Zurich Airport is one of the few places in the country where you can shop on a Sunday, and locals use it for exactly that.
The landside Airport Center and The Circle are open to anyone without a boarding pass. If you are in Zurich on a Sunday and need something the city cannot sell you, this is where you go — nine to thirteen minutes by train from the main station.
