Basel is the destination from Zurich Airport where we most often tell people to take the train — because the road and the rail take almost exactly the same time, and one of them costs a great deal less.

An hour and seven minutes either way. When the times are identical, the question becomes what else the option gives you — and for one or two people going to central Basel, the train gives you the same journey for a fraction of the price, arriving in the middle of the city rather than at a hotel entrance.

When the car earns its price

Groups. Four people is four rail tickets against one CHF 392 fare. Seven people in a V-Class is where it becomes clearly cheaper.

Luggage, trade fairs and materials. Basel hosts major fairs, and anyone travelling with equipment or samples does not want two station platforms in the middle.

Addresses outside the centre. The train serves Basel SBB. If you are going to Riehen, to the pharmaceutical campuses or across into Germany or France, the last leg matters.

Late arrivals. Rail connections thin after midnight; a booked car does not.

Three countries, one city

Basel sits where Switzerland, Germany and France meet, and the border is a fact of daily life rather than an event. A transfer can take you to Weil am Rhein, Lörrach or Saint-Louis on the same basis — priced from the road distance in the booking system.

Carry your passport or identity card. There is usually no checkpoint, but these are international crossings and you are required to be able to identify yourself.

Note also that Basel has its own airport, EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, which sits on French soil. If you have a choice of arrival airport for a Basel trip, that one is closer — but it has far fewer intercontinental connections than ZRH, which is why many long-haul passengers still land in Zurich.

What Basel is for

Basel is Switzerland’s cultural capital in a way Zurich is not. The Kunstmuseum holds one of Europe’s oldest public art collections, the Fondation Beyeler sits just outside the city, and Art Basel each June turns the whole place into a fair. It is also the centre of the Swiss pharmaceutical industry, which explains a great deal of the business traffic on this route.

The old town is compact and walkable, the Rhine runs through the middle of it, and in summer people swim down the river with their belongings in a waterproof bag — a local habit worth knowing about before you see it happening.
