The train is faster than the car, which is unusual and worth stating plainly. Nine to thirteen minutes on rails against roughly twenty-three by road before any traffic, from a platform directly beneath the terminal. Several services an hour, all day.
When the car is still right
CHF 120 buys you a fixed price to any address in the city — the whole of central Zurich sits inside the 20 km flat zone, so the fare does not change between the main station, the old town, Oerlikon or a hotel in Seefeld.
That is worth paying for when:
- you have checked luggage — Swiss trains have limited space and the walk at the far end is on you
- you are three or more — CHF 120 for the vehicle stops looking expensive against individual tickets
- you land after midnight, when services thin out
- you are going somewhere the tram does not, and the last leg would be a walk with bags
- it is a business arrival and the twenty minutes in a car are working time

Where you are probably going
The main station
Direct train, 9–13 min. If your onward journey is by rail, do not take a car to the station — take the train that is already going there.
Niederdorf and Lindenhof
Walkable from the main station. Narrow streets mean a car may not reach the door; the train plus five minutes on foot often wins.
Business district
Between the airport and the centre, and on the direct train line. Very quick either way.
Seefeld and Enge
Tram from the main station, or a car straight there. This is where luggage tips the decision towards the vehicle.
Getting back to the airport
The same logic reversed, with one addition: leave more margin than the journey requires. Zurich traffic at 07:30 is not the same as at 11:00, and the train, being unaffected by it, becomes even more attractive for an early departure.
Some airlines allow check-in at the railway station level before you go up to the terminal, which removes a queue. Worth asking your airline before you travel.
Tickets, briefly
The airport and the city are in different ZVV zones, so your ticket must cover both. Machines are in the Airport Center and on the platforms, and the SBB Mobile app sells the same thing without the queue.
