The Circle

Hotels, restaurants, a conference centre and a park built onto the airport, a covered walk from the terminal — and the best place to spend a short layover.

The Circle is the district built onto Zurich Airport — hotels, offices, restaurants, shops, a conference centre and a hospital outpatient facility, all connected to the terminal by a covered walkway. It opened in 2020 and it changed what an airport stopover in Zurich can be.

What is there

Use Detail
Hotels Hyatt Regency and Hyatt Place — the only accommodation you can walk to from check-in
Conference A convention centre used for events that never leave the airport complex
Restaurants A range of sit-down restaurants, landside and open to anyone
Shops Retail at normal Swiss prices rather than airside pricing
Offices Corporate tenants, including headquarters functions
Park A landscaped park behind the complex, on the Butzenbüel hill

Why it matters to a traveller

01 · Early flights

You walk to check-in

No shuttle at 04:30, no timetable, no weather. For a 06:00 departure this is the whole argument.

02 · Long layovers

Landside, and pleasant

Restaurants and a park rather than a departure lounge — if your connection allows you to leave airside.

03 · Meetings

Fly in, meet, fly out

A meeting at The Circle needs no journey into the city, which is precisely what it was built for.

04 · Eating

Normal prices

Landside restaurants are not priced as airside concessions. A genuine difference for a family.

Getting there

From the terminal it is a covered walk of a few minutes — signposted, step-free, and the reason The Circle works. From the city, take the same train to the airport and walk. By car, it has its own parking; by transfer, it is 6 km from the terminal building and inside the flat zone at CHF 120 in an E-Class, the same as the city.

The park

Behind the complex, the Butzenbüel hill has been landscaped into a public park. It is a genuinely odd and welcome thing to find at an airport: trees, paths and grass, a few minutes from a runway. On a long layover in good weather it is a better place to spend an hour than a departure lounge, and it costs nothing.

Practical notes

It is landside. Reaching it means leaving the secure area, so for a connection you must be able to pass immigration and go back through security afterwards. Judge the time before committing — see the layover guide.

The restaurants take bookings. The Circle is used by people working there as well as by travellers, so at lunchtime on a weekday it is busier than an airport concourse would suggest.

For a night before an early flight, this is the least stressful accommodation at Zurich by a distance — and priced accordingly. Weigh it against the alternatives.

The Circle at Zurich Airport — FAQ

What is The Circle at Zurich Airport?

A district built onto the airport containing hotels, offices, restaurants, shops, a conference centre and a park, connected to the terminal by a covered walkway. It opened in 2020.

How do I get from the terminal to The Circle?

On foot, along a signposted covered walkway that takes a few minutes and is step-free. There is no shuttle to catch and no timetable to check.

Which hotels are at The Circle?

A Hyatt Regency and a Hyatt Place. They are the only hotels at Zurich Airport you can reach on foot from check-in, which is what makes them worth their premium for an early departure.

Can I eat at The Circle without a flight?

Yes. The restaurants and shops are landside and open to anyone, at normal Swiss prices rather than airside concession pricing.

Is The Circle worth visiting on a layover?

If your connection lets you leave the secure area, yes — the restaurants and the park behind the complex are a better use of two hours than a departure lounge. Remember you will need to clear security again afterwards.

Is there really a park at Zurich Airport?

Yes, on the Butzenbühel hill behind The Circle. It is landscaped, public and free, and on a long layover in good weather it is the most pleasant place at the airport.
