The rail option needs explaining. Liechtenstein is crossed by a railway line, but it has almost no passenger service — a handful of trains a day at stations that are not where you want to be. In practice the rail journey is to Sargans in Switzerland, about an hour and a quarter, followed by a bus into the principality. That bus network is good and frequent, but it is a change with your luggage at a station you have never seen.
Vaduz and the rest
Vaduz is the capital and where most visitors go — the castle above the town, the national museum, the art museum, and the government buildings. It is small: the whole centre is walkable in twenty minutes.
The principality also includes Schaan, the largest municipality and the industrial centre, Balzers in the south with its castle, and Malbun, a small ski resort up in the mountains at around 1,600 m. A transfer reaches any of them on the same basis — give the address rather than the country.
Crossing the border
Liechtenstein is in the Schengen area and in customs union with Switzerland, so the crossing from Switzerland is unmarked and there is no checkpoint. That does not make it a domestic journey.
Carry your passport or identity card. You are required to be able to identify yourself, and the absence of a barrier is not the absence of a border. The Swiss franc is the currency, so nothing changes there.
Business travel
A significant share of the traffic on this route is business rather than tourism. Liechtenstein has a concentration of financial and industrial firms far out of proportion to its size, and a great deal of that activity is conducted by people who landed at Zurich that morning and will fly out that evening.
For a same-day return, book both legs together: it takes 10 % off the total and secures the vehicle for the outbound leg, which matters when the alternative is a bus to Sargans and a rail connection you cannot miss.
