The train is a good option here — roughly an hour with one change, or a little longer on a direct service. The car saves about fifteen minutes and removes the change, which matters most with luggage or in a group. From three people the arithmetic starts favouring the vehicle.
Lucerne as a base
Lucerne works better as a base than as a day trip, because of what is immediately around it. Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi are both reachable within an hour of the city by cogwheel railway, cable car and boat, and the lake steamers themselves are a reason to be there. Engelberg and the Titlis glacier are half an hour further on.
The old town is compact and almost entirely pedestrian, which is why a hire car is more burden than help. The Chapel Bridge, the wooden covered crossing with painted panels in the roof, is the most photographed structure in the country.
Combining it with the airport
