Zurich Airport has one genuinely useful shopping fact, and it is not about duty-free: the shops are open on Sunday. In a country where retail closes on Sundays by law, airport shops are exempt — which makes this a destination in itself for people who are not flying anywhere.

Duty-free, honestly
Duty-free at Zurich saves you Swiss tax on alcohol, tobacco and perfume, which is a genuine saving on those categories. It is not a general discount, and watches, chocolate and most Swiss goods are not meaningfully cheaper here than in the city — sometimes the reverse.
Two limits worth remembering. Duty-free is bounded by your destination’s import allowances, not by what you can carry: bringing a case of wine into a country with a two-bottle limit is a customs problem at the other end. And liquids bought duty-free before a connection must stay in the sealed bag with the receipt, or they will be taken at the next security check.
Buying Swiss things
Chocolate is available everywhere and is a reasonable buy, though a supermarket in the city sells the same brands for less.
Watches are well represented, and the airport is a legitimate place to buy one — but compare prices with the city rather than assuming the airport is cheaper. It generally is not.
Swiss army knives are the classic mistake: bought airside, they cannot go in your hand luggage on the next leg if you have a connection with a fresh security check. Buy them landside and put them in a checked bag.
VAT refund
If you are a visitor taking goods out of Switzerland, you may be able to reclaim Swiss VAT on qualifying purchases.
