Visitors resident outside Switzerland can reclaim Swiss VAT on goods they take home. The scheme works, the amounts are worth having on a significant purchase — and people lose the refund constantly, almost always for the same reason: they did it in the wrong order.
The order that matters
Ask at the time of purchase
Request the export document then and there. It cannot be issued afterwards, and a shop that does not participate cannot help you later.
Before you check the goods in
Customs must be able to see the goods. If they are inside a case already travelling on the belt, they cannot.
Customs stamp or kiosk
The export document is validated at the customs point. Without validation there is no refund, whatever the shop wrote.
Refund counter or by post
Cash at the counter, or credited to a card. Each route has its own processing time and deduction.
The failure mode is step 2. Someone packs the watch in their checked case, drops the bag, then goes looking for the refund desk. At that point the goods are unavailable for inspection and the claim is over.
What qualifies
The scheme applies to goods for personal use taken out of Switzerland, purchased at a participating retailer, above a minimum spend per shop per day, and exported within a set period. Services — hotels, meals, transport — do not qualify at all.
The current minimum, the export deadline and the VAT rate are set by the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security and revised from time to time. We do not print them here for the reason that runs through this whole site: a stale figure would cost you money at the counter. The current conditions are published by the customs authority and by the refund operators, and the shop will tell you at the point of sale.
Practical points
Allow time. The refund process adds a queue to a departure that already has check-in and security in it. Half an hour, more in the morning wave.
Keep everything together. Receipts, export documents and the goods, in your hand luggage, until validation is done.
Do not use the item. The scheme is for goods being exported, and something visibly worn or used can be refused.
Choose your refund method deliberately. Cash is immediate and carries a larger deduction; a card refund is better value and takes weeks.
Landing somewhere with an import allowance? Remember that reclaiming Swiss VAT does not exempt you from duty at the other end — see customs for the equivalent principle in the opposite direction.
VAT refund at Zurich Airport — FAQ
Can I claim Swiss VAT back at Zurich Airport?
Yes, if you are resident outside Switzerland, bought from a participating retailer above the minimum spend, and are exporting the goods for personal use within the permitted period.
Do I claim before or after checking in my luggage?
Before. Customs must be able to inspect the goods, so anything already inside a checked bag cannot be validated. This is the most common reason refunds are lost.
What do I need to bring to the refund desk?
The goods themselves, the receipts and the export document issued by the shop at the time of purchase. The document cannot be created afterwards.
How much is the Swiss VAT refund?
It depends on the current VAT rate and the operator’s deduction, both of which change. The shop will state the amount at the point of sale, and the customs authority publishes the current conditions.
Can I claim VAT back on hotels and meals?
No. The scheme covers goods being exported, not services. Accommodation, restaurants and transport do not qualify.
Should I take the refund in cash or on my card?
Cash is immediate but carries a larger deduction; a card refund is better value and takes several weeks. Choose deliberately rather than by default at the counter.
