Travelling with an animal is the one part of air travel where preparation is not optional. The rules are set by countries and airlines rather than by the airport, they are enforced strictly, and getting them wrong at Zurich means your animal does not travel.

Book the animal, not just the seat
Capacity per flight is limited and cannot be added later. Confirm cabin or hold, and the carrier dimensions.

Health certificates have validity windows counted in days before travel. Time them to the flight, not to convenience.

Cabin or hold
In the cabin for small animals within the airline’s weight and carrier limits, which are typically strict. The carrier stays under the seat in front and the animal stays in it.
In the hold, in an approved container, for anything larger. Airlines apply temperature embargoes — in extreme heat or cold, animals may not be carried at all — and some breeds, particularly short-nosed dogs and cats, are refused by many carriers on welfare grounds.
Assistance dogs are treated differently and travel with their handler. Arrange it with the airline in advance, as documentation is required.
